GIFT WILL BOOST OVERTOWN PROGRAMS

Nine programs that provide job training, housing and youth activities to Overtown residents will get a boost with a combined $1.5 million gift from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Hodding Carter III, foundation president and chief executive officer, praised the ongoing work to uplift the North Central Dade community.

''When we launched our Overtown revitalization effort two years ago, we understood it was going to require a sizable, long-term investment,'' Carter said in a statement announcing the awards. ``We are encouraged by the level of excellent work under way by a number of local and national organizations that are focusing their energies on Overtown. But we don't want to kid ourselves -- we know this is going to be an extended effort.''

So far, the foundation has contributed nearly $20 million in revitalization awards for Overtown and nearby East Little Havana.
