5/30/02 South Florida Poverty
The following ran in the May 25th edition of the Sun Sentinel (graph from the Herald)
that gives some numbers that might be of interest to members. The biggest issue
that seems to jump out is if the Census' poverty level out of date and too low.
An individual earning $9,000 a year not "poor"? Food for thought.
WHAT IS THE POVERTY LEVEL?
The federal government sets standards for poverty each year and used 1999 standards
for the 2000 census.
For individuals: less than $8,667 per year.
For individuals over 65: less than $7,990 per year.
